What is Weight Loss Surgery?

Weight loss surgery is surgery performed to change the function and shape of the patient’s digestive system. In this way, the patient can lose weight but more importantly treat obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, obstructive sleep apnea or acid reflux. It also helps reduce risk factors such as heart disease, stroke and cancer. Weight loss surgeries are performed in several different types.

These surgeries usually take three hours. This period may vary depending on some reasons. All slimming operations are performed in different procedures and under different conditions. For this reason, slimming surgeries are separated from each other. Some weight loss operations are suitable for obese people, while others are only suitable for overweight people who are not obese. Read on for more information.

Types of Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgeries are commonly performed in three ways in Turkey. These are; gastric sleeve, gastric balloon and gastric bypass operations.

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve is a weight loss surgery. Sleeve gastrectomy is usually performed by laparoscopic method or as a closed surgery as it is commonly known in the community. In this surgery, approximately 80% of the stomach is removed by inserting various instruments through a few small holes drilled into the abdomen. With sleeve gastrectomy, the size of the stomach is reduced. This limits the amount of food that can be consumed. In addition, with the decrease in stomach size, hormonal changes occur that help to lose weight. These changes contribute to the patient falling to the ideal weight or staying at the ideal weight after surgery.

Gastric Balloon

The endoscopic intragastric balloon or stomach balloon for short is a valid method applied all over the world. It is also applied as a non-surgical obesity treatment. This process gives the patient a feeling of satiety with the help of a balloon that takes up space in the stomach. The idea of controlling obesity was first developed in 1982. It is applied only for the elimination of weight that cannot be eliminated by diet and exercise and is not on the border of surgery. Thanks to this procedure, uncomplicated bariatric cases can be cured.

Gastric Bypass

In gastric bypass surgeries, a large part of the stomach is bypassed and a small volume (about 30-50 cc) stomach section is prepared and sutured to the small intestine. In this surgery, as in other bariatric surgery surgeries, it is aimed to reduce the stomach volume and to disable a part of the intestines and to discard some of the consumed food without being absorbed. Thus, patients are both saturated with less food and some of the food they receive is absorbed.

Before Weight Loss Surgery

If it can be done before surgery, a diet should be made and some weight should be lost. This procedure both reduces the risks associated with surgery and can facilitate the surgical procedure when it reduces liver size. For surgery preparation, all routine surgical tests are performed. Respiratory functions are evaluated. In addition, the stomach is evaluated by preoperative endoscopy for a possible stomach pathologies. Apart from the relevant examinations, the opinion of the cardiology, endocrinology, chest, psychiatry and anesthesiologist is taken for the operation consent. The patient is starved the night before. The doctor tells the patient what to do for the formation of vascular clots. After that, blood thinners are started.

Apart from these, your doctor will inform you about your diet. If you have a chronic disease or medications that you use continuously, you need to inform your doctor about this.

After Weight Loss Surgery

On the first day after the operation, according to the patient’s condition, liquid nutrition is started under the control of a dietitian and physician. Surgeries are performed with a closed method, that is, laparoscopically. It is made by entering the abdomen with the help of a telescope through 5-6 tiny incisions in the patient. Patients are started to be executed at the 4th hour after surgery. Depending on the surgery performed, patients are discharged within 3-5 days..

After discharge, it is recommended to drink at least 1-1.5 liters (8 cups) of water every day and to eat juicy food as determined by the dietitian for the first 2 weeks. We recommend that you take protein supplements every day. After 2 weeks have passed, soft food is gradually switched to and the importance of taking the bites in small sizes and swallowing them after chewing thoroughly is explained. Avoid heavy physical exercises and heavy lifting for a month after the operation.

For employees, they can return to work after 10 to 15 days, provided that they do not do heavy work. It is important that women who want to have children after surgery are protected for a year and get pregnant after passing the dietitian control.
